Information for Authors

Authors and/or book editors are encouraged to submit their book proposals, for books which are not presently under consideration with another publisher, in a format defined by the author guidelines. Please send us the completed book proposal together with a sample chapter (if already available) by e-mail.

Proposal and peer review process

Upon submitting your book proposal, the editorial staff will work towards assessing the form for completeness. The first stage involves pre-assessment by our internal editorial board to determine the suitability of the book proposal. If suitable, the author/funder will receive a quotation for the book processing charges for consideration and approval. The complete manuscript is submitted, and the publisher conducts external peer review for approval. After formal acceptance, the funder pays the books processing charges. The editing and publication process begins. It may not be possible to incorporate author corrections in the printed version of the manuscript if the author fails to respond to proofreading requests. This will include the preparing of your index. Finally, the open access book is assigned an appropriate CC-BY license and published as a PDF and EPUB and listed on indexing websites.

Accepted book types

Book proposals are welcomed from all academic fields. We publish the following types of scholarly books:

  • Monographs: A stand-alone work of original research or in-depth literature review by one or more authors.
  • Collected works: A stand-alone work assembled by one or more scholars in a field or related field, often as a supplement to a scholarly journal.
  • Collective works: A stand-alone work assembled by one or more scholars in several related fields and collectively reviewed.
  • Book series: A collection of volumes on a subject/field of study. Volumes can be monographs or collected/collective works. Book series usually produce one volume per year in an ongoing process.
  • PhD dissertations: A stand-alone work based on a recent PhD thesis, with evidence of substantial reworking (at least 50%) and additional (new) research additions.
  • Conference proceedings: A collection of shorter academic papers published in the context of an academic conference.

What to keep in mind for your publication at Afropolitan Book:

  • As a rule, we need a print-ready DOCX/PDF of the manuscript. We will be happy to advise you and provide you with a Word template if necessary.
  • If you wish, we can design the cover for your publication on the basis of your suggestions (this incurs additional charges).
  • Please note that Afropolitan Book is an Open Access platform. Works published by us are usually under a Creative Commons license (preferably CC-BY or CC-BY-SA). We pursue an author-friendly rights policy: The copyrights in the work remain with you, the author. Afropolitan Book receives only a simple right of use.
  • Important: Authors are also responsible for all content that they do not produce themselves. This includes, for example, images, videos, data, audio files or diagrams. Any material that is not the sole creation of the author may only be used with the consent of the respective rights holder or on the basis of legal permissions. Afropolitan Publications accepts no liability for the use of third-party content.
  • If you generate content of your work with the help of artificial intelligence (Artificial Intelligence Generated Content, AIGC), you must describe the use of this tool transparently and in detail in a "Methods" section. As the author, you are fully responsible for the accuracy of the information provided by the tool and for correctly citing any supporting work (sources) on which this information is based.

ORCID

For optimal visibility and attribution of your publication, we recommend setting up an "Open Researcher and Contributor ID" (ORCID). This is an internationally valid code, available free of charge, which gives researchers a digital identity. It allows a clear and permanent assignment of author, research institution and publication. Detailed information on ORCID can be found at ORCID.org.
